Some cases turn to get difficult and emotional, just as Nick Camuccio said, Assistant State Attorney who prosecuted the case, pointing to the Suzana Jordan Bici sentence, a 26-year-old woman who was found guilty of DUI manslaughter and DUI with bodily injury to another, on May 2016, at Northeast 245th Street and 160th Avenue. Unfortunately, this crash claimed the life of Joel Smerkers, a 30-year-old man from Brandon, who was pinned under the left side of a 2005 Dodge Durango. Daniela Galvan, another passenger, was thrown from the vehicle and suffered broken ribs, a punctured lung and head injuries but is recovering from it.

Bici was on scene and had several injuries. There was an odor of alcohol on her breath when she spoke, according to the FHP report. She consented to a blood draw and was interviewed by a traffic homicide investigator about the crash. At first instance, she denied committing the act saying that she was a passenger in the vehicle and that Brian Sider was the driver. Sider, however, told the trooper that Bici was the one driving and he was a passenger. He also said that she told him “to take the fall” and ran away.

After voluntary blood samples and interviews, troopers told Bici she could leave, the reports said. Less than an hour later, she returned to the crash scene, held her hands together and told troopers, “Just take me in. I did it.”

Bici was re-interviewed and told a trooper she was the driver and was “going to do the right thing” and surrender, the report said. In that interview, she said there was a curve in the road and she lost control.

Bici’s sentencing by Circuit Judge Willard Pope is set for March 4. She faces a minimum of four years and a maximum of 20 years behind bars.
